Using LiveMesh for Remote Work at 3Metas

How 3Metas leveraged Microsoft LiveMesh to enable distributed team collaboration in 2009, pioneering remote work practices before they became mainstream.

Breaking the Physical Office Paradigm

At 3Metas, we were challenging the traditional office model. Most team members worked from home, and even those on-site with clients maintained flexible remote schedules. This wasn't just about convenience—it was a fundamental reimagining of how software companies could operate.

The Remote Work Vision (2009)

  • Eliminate geographic constraints on talent acquisition
  • Support geographic expansion without physical offices
  • Enable flexible work arrangements for team members
  • Maintain seamless collaboration across distributed teams

Why LiveMesh?

To support this distributed operating model, we needed tools that replicated traditional office capabilities. Microsoft LiveMesh provided real-time file synchronization across team members' computers—not just for individual multi-device sync, but for true team collaboration.

Key Capabilities

  • • Real-time file synchronization across team members
  • • Automatic conflict resolution for concurrent edits
  • • Change notifications when files were updated
  • • Offline access with automatic sync when reconnected
  • • Granular folder-level sharing controls

Quick Setup Guide

1

Authenticate with Windows Live

Visit mesh.com and sign in with your Windows Live, Messenger, or Hotmail credentials. This provided single sign-on across Microsoft services.

2

Install Desktop Client

From the device management console, add your computer and install the LiveMesh client. The client integrated with Windows Explorer for seamless file management.

3

Select Shared Folders

After logging into the client application, choose which folders to share with your team. Mesh folders appeared with a distinctive blue icon in Explorer.

4

Invite Team Members

Share folders with specific team members by email invitation. Recipients received notifications and could accept to sync the folder to their devices.

5

Automatic Sync & Notifications

When any team member modified files, all participants received notifications. Changes synchronized automatically in the background.

Historical Significance

Note: This article from 2009 documents early remote work practices—years before COVID-19 made distributed teams mainstream. LiveMesh was discontinued in 2013, with functionality merged into OneDrive and SharePoint. However, 3Metas' vision of remote-first operations proved prescient. Today's tools like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and specialized platforms like Notion and Confluence have standardized capabilities that were experimental in 2009.

Lessons That Endured

  • Remote work requires intentional tool selection and team training
  • File synchronization alone isn't enough—you need communication layers
  • Distributed teams can be as effective as co-located ones with proper infrastructure
  • Early adoption of remote work provided competitive advantages in talent and flexibility
