Testing Speaking

Test Management Event with Visual Studio 2008

On November 30, 2008, I presented a session on test management using Visual Studio Team System 2008 at Microsoft Colombia's invitation. We explored automated testing strategies including unit testing with code coverage, web functional testing, and load testing.

Session Overview

Together with Miguel Mendoza from Synergy, we demonstrated practical testing scenarios using VSTS 2008 for Testers. The session covered a comprehensive range of automated testing approaches for modern web applications.

Topics Covered

  • •
Unit Testing with Code Coverage: Writing and running unit tests with coverage analysis to identify untested code paths
  • •
Web Functional Testing: Automated browser-based testing to validate user workflows and application functionality
  • •
Load Testing: Stress testing applications under concurrent user load to identify performance bottlenecks
  • •
SharePoint Testing: Functional and load testing strategies specific to SharePoint portals
  • •
Cross-Platform Testing: Automated tests against PHP applications and non-.NET platforms
  • •
Test Data Generation: Using DataGenerator from VS2008 Database Professionals for realistic test data

Advanced Testing Scenarios

We explored several sophisticated testing approaches that demonstrated VSTS 2008's versatility:

SharePoint Portal Testing

Using VS2008 for Testers, we recorded and played back complex user interactions with SharePoint portals, then converted these into load tests to validate performance under concurrent user scenarios. This approach revealed authentication challenges and resource contention issues specific to SharePoint deployments.

Database-Driven Testing

We demonstrated automated testing against PHP applications using database-driven test data. By connecting tests to SQL databases, we could validate application behavior with realistic datasets and ensure consistency across different execution environments.

Test Data Generation

VS2008 Database Professionals edition included DataGenerator, a tool for generating realistic test data that respects foreign key constraints and business rules. This eliminated manual test data creation and ensured tests ran with representative data volumes.

Key Testing Principles Demonstrated

  • •
Automation Reduces Regression Risk: Automated tests caught issues early when code changed
  • •
Code Coverage Reveals Gaps: Coverage analysis identified untested code paths that needed attention
  • •
Load Testing Before Production: Performance issues discovered under load prevent production incidents
  • •
Cross-Platform Testing Matters: Integration points with non-.NET systems need validation
  • •
Test Data Quality Affects Results: Realistic data produces meaningful test outcomes

VSTS 2008 Testing Capabilities

Visual Studio Team System 2008 provided a comprehensive testing platform integrated with source control and work item tracking:

  • • Unit Test Framework: Built-in testing framework with assertions and mocking support
  • • Code Coverage Analysis: Visual representation of tested vs. untested code paths
  • • Web Test Recorder: Browser automation recording tool for functional tests
  • • Load Test Engine: Multi-user simulation with performance counters and thresholds
  • • Test Manager Integration: TFS work items linked to test cases for traceability

Acknowledgments

Thank you to all participants for their questions and engagement, to Miguel Mendoza for demonstrating advanced scenarios, and to Luis Linares from Microsoft Colombia for organizing the event. The presentation drew on expertise from several Team Foundation Server and testing experts including Juan Carlos Viñas, Jorge Ramo López, Rodrigo Corral, and Bruno Capuano.

Modern Context: Testing in 2025

While VSTS 2008 is now legacy technology, the testing principles from 2008 remain foundational. Modern testing has evolved significantly:

  • • Unit testing frameworks: Jest, Vitest, pytest, JUnit 5 with better mocking and async support
  • • E2E testing: Playwright, Cypress replace web test recorder with modern browser automation
  • • Load testing: k6, Artillery, Gatling provide code-based load test definitions
  • • CI/CD integration: Tests run automatically on every commit via GitHub Actions, GitLab CI
  • • Code coverage: Istanbul, Coverage.py integrated into build pipelines with quality gates
  • • Test data: Faker, Factory patterns, Docker for reproducible test databases
  • • Cloud testing: BrowserStack, Sauce Labs for cross-browser testing at scale

Enduring Testing Wisdom

The 2008 session emphasized principles that remain critical today: automate repetitive tests to catch regressions, measure code coverage to identify gaps, validate performance under load before production, use realistic test data, and integrate testing into development workflows. What changed is the tooling—modern frameworks are faster, more maintainable, and deeply integrated with CI/CD pipelines. But the core insight persists: systematic automated testing is essential for delivering reliable software at velocity.

Key Takeaways

1. Automated testing prevents regressions - catch issues early in development
2. Code coverage reveals blind spots - measure to improve test quality
3. Load testing predicts production behavior - validate performance before launch
4. Cross-platform testing reduces integration risk - test all system boundaries
5. Testing principles transcend tools - fundamentals remain constant across generations
