Log4Net New Version Release

Instrumentation is a key element in real-world software application development. When facing an application error in production on a server or environment without development tools, with the pressure to quickly identify the problem and resolve it, our only hope is that the development team implemented proper instrumentation.

Why Log4Net?

My favorite tool for this is Log4Net. It's stable, minimally invasive, highly effective, and configurable. At this point, it has become mandatory for any software project I undertake.

Key Benefits

  • Stable and battle-tested in production environments
  • Minimally invasive to your codebase
  • Highly configurable for different scenarios
  • Essential for debugging production issues

What's New in This Release

Just a few days ago, a new version was published with several improvements. Among the highlights is support for execution in medium trust environments for .NET applications.

Medium Trust Support

This is particularly valuable when working with cloud computing providers like Rackspace, where full trust permissions don't exist for applications, and likely many other shared hosting environments as well.

Medium trust environments restrict application permissions for security reasons. With this update, Log4Net now works seamlessly in these restricted environments, making it accessible for a wider range of deployment scenarios.

Why Instrumentation Matters

In production environments, you often don't have the luxury of attaching a debugger or stepping through code. When something breaks at 2 AM, comprehensive logging is what separates a quick fix from hours of blind troubleshooting.

With Logging

Quickly identify exact error location, state, and context

Without Logging

Hours of guesswork trying to reproduce the issue

If you're not already using Log4Net in your .NET applications, this is a great time to start. And if you are, consider upgrading to take advantage of the new medium trust support and other improvements.
